On April 19th Natural Gourmet Institute attended a fundraising dinner to support Mayor Bloomberg’s NYC School Gardens Initiative. The event was hosted by the mayor himself and Mario Batali at Del Posto Restaurant.
The Garden Initiative is the newest facet of the Mayor’s GrowNYC Project, which encompasses the city’s expanding greenmarkets, sustainability centers, gardens, rain water harvesting, recycling and environmental education initiatives.
Specifically, the Garden Initiative will deepen the relationship New York City youth have with food. The project will involve and empower students to grow their own food, make healthier and more nutritional food choices, and choose the culinary arts as a viable career path.
Natural Gourmet’s support for the School Gardens Initiative goes hand-in-hand with the work of our staff and graduates with such organizations as The Children’s Aid Society, Sylvia Center, Project Aspire, The Expeditionary Learning School for Community Leaders, Wellness in the Schools, and the Edible Schoolyard (in New Orleans).
